Yaoi Movie

I once asked a friend who is involved in the yaoi manga industry on this subject She explained that It's very cultural/social more than anything Mostly women write/draw these and the "no means yes" is very much fetishized in the way women are often treated there Sociological studies has it that it's a way for the women to deal with oppression I am not saying there's a strong rapeculture there but women as a whole in any Asian society are not meant to be equals They are meant to be married and have kids And often sexual harassment occurs and the society dealt with it in the way of put a band aid on it instead of fixing the problem For example there's a constant problem with drunken salarymen who board the train and sexually harass women Touching them etc There's so much reports of it and so bad that instead of teaching the men "you can't do that" they simply designate certain cars in the train (by painting it pink and calling it "women only" during rush hours) for female passengers Although I know this occurs here also in US of A Over there the misogyny is so open and obvious that women tolerate it IT is just what it is So when they do MM porn it's a way of displacing themselves A psychological way of dealing with it by replacing it with men Of course this is a very sociological look at it But the bottom line is it's simply something a lot of them find exciting They read other stories like this and they repeat it etc

I once asked a friend who is involved in the yaoi manga industry on this subject. She explained that: It's very cultural/social more than anything. Mostly women write/draw these and the "no means yes" is very much fetishized in the way women are often treated there. Sociological studies has it that it's a way for the women to deal with oppression. I am not saying there's a strong rape-culture there but women as a whole, in any Asian society, are not meant to be equals. They are meant to be married and have kids. And often sexual harassment occurs and the society dealt with it in the way of - put a band aid on it instead of fixing the problem. For example, there's a constant problem with drunken salarymen who board the train and sexually harass women. Touching them, etc. There's so much reports of it and so bad that - instead of teaching the men "you can't do that" -- they simply designate certain cars in the train (by painting it pink and calling it "women only" during rush hours) for female passengers. Although I know this occurs here also, in US of A. Over there, the misogyny is so open and obvious that women tolerate it. IT is just what it is. So when they do M-M porn, it's a way of displacing themselves. A psychological way of dealing with it by replacing it with men. Of course - this is a very sociological look at it. But the bottom line is - it's simply something a lot of them find exciting. They read other stories like this and they repeat it, etc.

When our manga came out - we were hammered by a lot of the same readers of this genre because the main character "didn't enjoy it (rape". And it upset them. They wrote in blogs and reviews that they were depressed for days. The violence and the non-con not being reciprocated as an act of love. Or clumsy way of showing love (as this is the common theme - that it's not really rape. because the aggressor really loves him, etc). So - the bottom line is, you really can't read JP manga/yaoi by Western standards. Because yes, they do fetishize rape fantasies. )

It would be interesting if any Japanese CR member could confirm this for us. Perhaps they could share their thoughts with us?

Hope my friend's explanation helps a bit with the article.

Type

japan

Type

Types (Japanese: タイプ Type ) are properties for Pokémon and their moves. Each type has three properties: which types of Pokémon it is super effective against, which types of Pokémon it is not very effective against, and which types of Pokémon it is completely ineffective against. There are 18 types, each of which is listed to the right. During Generation I. types were occasionally referred to as elements .

A Pokémon may have either one or two types. For instance, Charmander is a Fire type, while Bulbasaur is both a Grass type and a Poison type. With the current 18-type system, there are 324 possible ways to assign types to Pokémon, with 171 unique combinations. As of Generation VI. 131 different type combinations have been used. Pokéstar Studios opponents can also have types.

All moves have only one assigned type. However, the moves Flying Press and Freeze-Dry have custom interactions with defending types that do not strictly match their assigned types.

Contents

Type effectiveness

If the type of a move used by a Pokémon is strong against the opponent's type, then the damage done is twice the normal amount. However, if a move's type is not very effective against the opponent's type, the damage done is half the normal amount.

For Pokémon that have two types, the overall damage is calculated against both types combined. This means that if a move's type is strong against both of the opponent's types (such as Dig. a Ground-type move, used against an Aggron. a Steel /Rock Pokémon), then the move does 4 times the damage. On the other hand, if a move's type is weak against both of the opponent's types (such as Wake-Up Slap. a Fighting-type move, used against a Sigilyph. a Psychic /Flying Pokémon), then the move does ¼ of the damage. Similarly, if the move is strong against one of the opponent's types but weak against the other (such as Razor Leaf. a Grass-type move, used against a Gyarados. a Water /Flying Pokémon), the move deals normal damage.

If a move's type is completely ineffective due to one of the opponent's types, then the move does zero damage, even if the opponent has a second type that would be vulnerable to it (as in Thunderbolt. an Electric-type move, used against a Quagsire. a Water /Ground Pokémon). Otherwise, before Generation V, a move will always do at least one HP of damage. In Generation V, it became possible to deal zero damage since certain damage modifiers (such as Reflect ) are applied after the damage is ensured to be at least 1.

Type chart

A type chart shows which modifiers are applied to move types when attacking Pokémon of each type. Please note that this only covers single types, not pairs. To get a dual-type Pokémon's matchup against a specific move type, go across the table's columns to each of the types, see what the effectiveness of the move is against both, and multiply the effectiveness together: in this way a Flying-type move would hit for 4× damage on a Bug /Grass Pokémon, while a Ground-type move used against the same would do only a quarter of its normal damage. The type chart differs depending on the generation of games it is from.

Inverse Battles reverse this type chart, making immunities and resistances into weaknesses, and weaknesses into resistances.

Gay Geekery Boys’ Love Abroad Japanese Yaoi

Gay Geekery: Boys’ Love Abroad, Japanese Yaoi

man

This post was submitted by Jack

After baring a bit of my soul last time, I would like to talk today about geeky representations of male-male sexuality in Japan.  I’ll do that by defining some words and concepts that will provide a good background.

Yaoi ( やおい ): Today in Japan, yaoi has mostly been replaced with the term Boys’ Love ( ボーイズラブ ).  Another even older term that is still in circulation in some places is shounen ai ( 少年愛 ), which quite literally means boy love.  In the US, these terms are used interchangeably in fan communities so they’re all pretty much indispensible.

Bara ( 薔薇 ): In parallel to the current fashionable term, Boys’ Love, bara media in Japan is now often called Men’s Love ( メンズラブ ).  While yaoi is primarily produced by and for women, bara generally originates more directly from gay male communities.  It also has a particular meaning in terms of the kinds of men being shown.  They tend to be bigger, more full-figured, hairier, and all-around “manlier.”  This is, of course, not unproblematic as femme boys get coded as women and masculine guys become legitimized as gay.

Uke ( 受 け ) and Seme ( 攻 め ): Another major difference between yaoi and bara production is the assignation of unchanging sexual roles, which is far more likely in yaoi.  In a romantic pair, one is often assigned the position of uke, which literally means recipient, and one seme, or attacker.  These are roughly correspondent to our terms, top and bottom.  The problem comes when these tend to be mapped onto characters by way of gender expression so that femme boys are always bottoms with few exceptions.  To be fair, though, it should be stated that in response to this criticism, these categories have become somewhat less fixed.  Especially noteworthy is the introduction of the category of the Riba (リバ), for reverse, meaning versatile or switch.

X :  In the US, we usually write fan-paired characters with a slash (/), but the Japanese convention is to note it with an x so one thinks of Shinji x Kaworu rather than Shinji/Kaworu for Neon Genesis Evangelion ( 新世紀エヴァンゲリオ ン ), for example.

Doujinshi ( 同人誌 ): Like the tradition of fan-fiction in the United States (and elsewhere), the most common form of fan-produced media in Japan are comic books called doujinshi that are printed by small presses and sold at conventions and in stores for a small amount of money that covers their creation costs.  They are typically created by groups of collaborators called doujin circles ( サークル ).  The content ranges from humorous to adventuresome and even pornographic.  A doujinshi is considered yaoi (or other related term) if it highlights a romantic or sexual relationship between two male characters from a source work usually whose relationship did not appear in the original.  For manga like Fake or XXXHolic where male-male relationships are already present or heavily implied, fan works may simply make them more explicit or bring them into focus.  Doujinshi is not just produced taking Japanese anime, manga, and video games as points of departure.  I have also seen doujinshi of foreign media including Star Wars . Star Trek . X-Men . Power Puff Girls, House M.D. . Torchwood . Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles . Prison Break . CSI . Master and Commander . 300, Teen Titans, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean . Supernatural . Dexter . Chronicles of Narnia . Numbers . Batman . Superman . Spiderman . Iron Man . and, of course, Harry Potter .  Part of the fun of doujinshi is the opportunity to play with many different possible pairings and art styles.  The example covers from Harry Potter doujinshi below show the diversity.

Swag Bag: All The RightStuf With BL, Kai and Viz

man

By Lissa Pattillo on Sunday, June 5, 2011

Canada Post recently announcing their rotating strike was already bad news on its own but I was doubly cranky about it as my box of RightStuf goodies was presumably trapped somewhere between here and there. Luck was on my side though and on the morning the strike was set to start, my box arrived!

Taking advantage of their Digital Manga sale a little while back, I picked up a bunch of my must-have titles at prices I couldn’t possibly refuse! Paying their sale price on the US price, and the Canadian dollar as it is, I got each book for 50% off what I would’ve paid here.

Continuing current series, I bought Target in the Finder (Vol. 03) . Kizuna Omnibus (Vol. 02) and Tyrant Who Falls In Love (Vol. 02) . Now that I’ve got a couple volmes of Kizuna and Finder . it’s time to retire my BeBeautiful version to the storage bins. I also purchased Replica (Vol. 01) and Countdown 7 Days (Vol. 01) . Both are shonen (I think?) series that I was able to get an early preview of from Digital Manga. I really liked them both and hope they still get a chance to impress people despite being hidden within DM’s big boys’ love library.

Back to the boys’ love, I got one of BLU’s final publications: Crimson Snow . It’s a one-shot title that I’ve been dying to have in my hand since I saw the gorgeous cover on Amazon last year. Learning the plot only furthered my want so it was the first to have its plastic covering ripped off. I also picked up the last two volumes of breath – a five volume BL series by the so far one-series company Yaoi Generation who’s been disappointedly quiet since last year.

And because a RightStuf purchase isn’t complete without some anime, I happily took advantage of the Funimation sale to buy Dragonball Z Kai Parts 2-4 and the second half of the series Welcome to the NHK .

Buying back on more local soil, I visited our big bookstore Chapters as the customary before-and-after seeing a movie ritual (aka, it’s right next door to the biggest theatre). Last week I was thrilled to get a copy of A Bride’s Story from Yen Press. It’s a really gorgeous book and you’ll want to spend some time oogling the hard cover design before  you even crack it open.

This upcoming week is Viz Media ‘s huge shipping list, which generally always happens the first week of the month. This often means a big armful of books for me and this month was no exception, especially with some of my absolute favourites out. Books carried to the check-out included Pokemon Adventures (Vol. 13) . Bleach (Vol. 35), Blue Excorcist (Vol. 02) and Toriko (Vol. 05) . I also bought Full Metal Alchemist 3-in-1 (Vol. 01) because of a friends’ recommendation. To try and round out the shonen just a little, I also bought Grand Guignol Orchestra (Vol. 03) – battling doll-like zombies with music while wearing Victorian gothic attire!

Thankfully I just finished a big Spring cleaning revamp of my manga bookshelves (which of course included adding a new one), so there’s plenty of space to start adding in my new goodies. That said, I’ll be selling a couple boxes full at this upcoming Animaritime so East Coast Canadians have another reason to come enjoy the event ;)

So what was in your swag bag this week?

Yaoi

Yaoi (properly [ja.o.i]. informally /jaʊi/ ), also known as Boys' Love ( BL ), is a Japanese genre of fictional media focusing on homoerotic romantic or sexual relationships between male characters, aimed at a female audience and usually created by female authors. Although yaoi is primarily aimed at a female audience, the genre also attracts some male readers; however, Bara. manga aimed at a gay male audience, is considered a separate genre.

The main characters in yaoi usually conform to the formula of the seme (top, or dominant figure) who pursues the uke (bottom, or passive figure). Material classified as yaoi typically depicts gay relationships between attractive male characters, and may include erotic content. Although the yaoi genre is also called Boys' Love (commonly abbreviated as BL ), the characters may be of any age above puberty, including adults. Works featuring prepubescent boys are labelled shotacon. and seen as a distinct genre.

Yaoi derives from two sources; in the early 1970s, shōjo (girl's) manga magazines published tanbi (aesthetic) stories, also known as shōnen ai (boy love), featuring platonic relationships between young boys. The other influence began in the dōjinshi (fan fiction ) markets of Japan in the late 1970s as yaoi . a sexualized parody of popular shōnen (boy's) manga and anime stories. In the late 1970s, shōjo magazines devoted to the new genre began to appear, and in the 1990s the wasei-eigo term Boys' Love or BL was invented for the genre, which replaced earlier terms such as tanbi . shōnen ai and Juné in Japanese usage.

yaoi

In Japan, the term yaoi continues to refer mainly to parody dōjinshi; among Western fans, however, yaoi is used as a generic term for female-oriented manga. anime. dating sims. novels and fan fiction works featuring idealized homosexual male relationships. The genre has spread beyond Japan, and both translated and original yaoi works are now available in many countries and languages.
