Resident Complains to Library to Change Checkout System

Resident Complains to Library to Change Checkout System

According to the blog, De Nevers' niece, described by De Nevers as a "huge anime fan," checked out a few manga titles after her grandmother dropped her off at the library, including the Tateno title. De Nevers found the title a few days later when going through her books.

De Nevers noted that he saw that the book had a "Parental Advisory" sticker on the cover, and told the B-Town Blog that he opened the book and "couldn't believe what I saw inside." De Nevers described the volume as containing drawings of two men having "rather violent" sex.

De Nevers wrote a letter to Bill Ptacek, the director of the KCLS, as well as Jim Wigfall, the KCLS' board president. The letter explained the incident and said:

How can it be that a young girl can check-out this book? Why would it even be located in a place where children would have easy access to it? It was by chance that I happened to pick up the book from a pile of her library books and noticed the label.

I do not want this to happen again to my niece or other children. I am asking that you review your check-out practices and make the changes necessary to prevent it. Please send me a response detailing your steps to correct this serious situation.

De Nevers also told the B-Town Blog that "What also sickens me is that people are going to the library to read this kind of content? An anime comic book section is where people go to read porn? Around kids? There is no good coming from this being in our library."

King County Library System's Statement

The King County Library System confirmed the incident with ANN, and provided ANN with the following statement:

In keeping with the mission to provide free, open and equal access to ideas and information, KCLS develops its collection to reflect the diversity of the patrons we serve. Materials are selected based on a variety of criteria including, but not limited to, current and anticipated needs and interests of the public and contribution to the breadth of collections. We also expand the collection by responding to requests from patrons, and graphic novels are one of the most requested areas of the collection. When evaluating suggested titles, staff consults industry-related websites, newsletters and blogs. If overall reviews are positive, a title is purchased; conversely, if the consensus is negative, the request is declined.

Although many people associate graphic novels with children and teens, the industry increasingly publishes titles for adults thanks to the popularity of Anime TV shows.

The title checked out, “ Hero Heel 2” was catalogued as Adult Non-Fiction. All non-fiction titles, including children's non-fiction, are shelved together. The parental advisory sticker on the cover was adhered to the book by the publisher. KCLS does not apply ratings to its materials but recognizes that certain items in the collection that are popular with some may be considered objectionable by others. For that reason, staff relies on the authority of parents and legal guardians to supervise the reading, viewing or listening use of library materials for their own minor children. KCLS' Parental Responsibility Policy. states in part, that:

“Parents and guardians are responsible for their children's behavior, safety and welfare while their children are in the library or on library grounds, which includes their children's access to library materials and electronic resources. KCLS strongly recommends that a parent, guardian or other responsible party be present to supervise children ages 12 and younger. KCLS staff is available to assist parents, guardians and their children in the use of the library; however, KCLS staff cannot act “in loco parentis” (in place of a parent) for children in the library.”

The Policy also states that

“KCLS will not limit children to the use of books in the children's section of the library, as these materials may not meet the needs and interests of all children. In addition, library staff is not responsible for determining whether materials used by children and teens are “age appropriate.”

These policies are not unique to KCLS. They are consistent with public library policies across the United States.

KCLS is always happy to suggest reading materials that are in keeping with a family's values and show parents how to use the library catalog to find out more information about a book before it is checked it out.

Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Responds

Maren Williams from the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) also responded to the situation on Tuesday, stating that:

As CBLDF readers are aware, comics, graphic novels, and manga often face challenges from those who think any book with lots of pictures must be for children. That certainly seems to be the case here, as de Nevers expresses surprise that “an anime comic book section is where people go to read porn.” While Hero Heel 2 likely doesn't qualify as pornography by a strict definition, it is definitely intended for adults, who make up a large part of any library's patron base. Modern public libraries build their collections with a wide variety of ages, tastes, cultures, and interests in mind. There may be indeed be materials in those collections that some parents do not want their children to access, but the responsibility for setting those boundaries lies with the parents, not the libraries.

My thoughts on yaoi (no really)

My thoughts on yaoi (no, really)

man

As I was toodling around in Lissa Pattillo’s post-birthday/station-identification post this morning, I found myself mulling (once I’d finished groaning about my own old age) over my many issues with boys’ love manga. I have a fairly long history in slash fanfiction, and while a lot of it is really not to my taste (I prefer thoughtful, characterization-rich stories that reveal something new about the characters, as opposed to gratuitous smut-fests or sugary wish-fulfillment romances, and I’ll admit that the last two of these make up at least 75% of all relationship-focused fanfiction), it is easy to find the stuff I do like, now that I know how. So when I started really getting into manga, I thought boys’ love was going to be a no-brainer for me. Delving into the genre, though, I’ve been disappointed again and again, to the point where I’ve pretty much given up on it. I’m hoping Lissa’s blog will help me discover some series I enjoy, but I’m not as optimistic as I’d like. After all, even Jason Thompson let me down here. But I’m hoping that, as with fanfiction, it might be easy for me to find what I’m looking for, once I know how.

My main problems with the boys’ love manga I’ve read have been as follows:

1. Romance. The romance seems rushed and *really* contrived. Boys who don’t even know each other at the beginning of the story are declaring everlasting love by the end of the first volume, and while this may, on the surface, reflect the nature of some young teen and pre-teen romance (remember in seventh grade, when couples would be formed almost entirely by way of messages relayed by each other’s friends? “I’m here to tell you that Stacy likes Matt and wants to be his girlfriend.” “Matt says ‘okay'”) the way these romances are presented, they feel like they’ve come straight from the mind of a 12-year-old watching from the sidelines. Just as the 12-year-old is too young and (necessarily) self-involved to really have any insight into the scene playing out before her, outside of how it affects her (admiration? envy?), these stories are told without looking any deeper than that. And maybe if that 12-year-old is the target audience for the story, that’s exactly as it should be. But as an adult reader, something that seems told from the perspective of a romantically inclined 12-year-old mind is not really sufficient to keep me engaged. Even the conflict in these stories seems idealized and rushed to resolution. In fanfiction, it’s true, the writer can get pretty quickly to the romance, or at least more quickly than otherwise, but this is only because it is assumed that the reader has already read/seen/whatever the original author’s work, so all that buildup of plot and characterization has been *done* already. It makes sense to me that yaoi, with its doujinshi roots, would have developed like this in the beginning. But when I’m reading an original story, this kind of shortcut just doesn’t work for me.

2. Plot. You know, when I think about it, this is really just an extension of my first item, but it’s big enough to warrant its own section here, I think. My husband once asked me, “Is Banana Fish yaoi?” and my immediate response was, “I wish .” And when I said that, it wasn’t because I wished that the romance in Banana Fish had been more explicit, because honestly, I didn’t need it to be. What I meant was that I wish I’d ever read a boys’ love manga as interesting and well-plotted as Banana Fish . and maybe what this means is that I don’t really want to read boys’ love manga at all . It’s possible that I just have to accept that the real audience for BL really does want to just get to the romance as quickly as possible, see the boys make out and work their way up to sex as quickly as possible, and is really not interested in having to read a real *story* in order to get there. Unfortunately for me, I am. I really want to read a story . and I wish very much that I could find some long, epic stories that just happen to contain queer romance as they go. Like, maybe if those three volumes of Rin! or Little Butterfly (both of which had positive write-ups in Manga: The Complete Guide ) had actually been ten volumes, and the romance was developed over the course of a much greater plot, I would have actually liked them, because honestly I did find the characters interesting, what I got to see of them. I just felt cheated by the way the “plot” and the relationships were rushed along to serve the romance.

3. Seme/uke. Okay. I’ll admit, I just don’t get it. Probably this makes me an ignorant westerner, but I really just don’t understand how/why this convention became standard in boys’ love manga, and I personally find it off-putting. I can’t decide what disturbs me more, that one of the male characters is being forced into the role of “female” or that this role is what is considered to be “female” to begin with. Again, maybe the problem here is that I’m not the proper target audience, but I really crave stories that value individual characterization over traditional gender roles, and I find this particular formula to be distracting at best (and offensive at worst). Also, I don’t care what the characters do in bed as much as what they do out of bed, so the many pages devoted to cementing the seme/uke roles by demonstrating their assigned top/bottom roles in bed are mostly just boring to me, especially since the sex scenes seem to always revolve around getting the uke over his fear of penetration, which… well, I could go on for a very long time about how unrealistic and heteronormative I think that is, but I’ll spare you here.

Reading this back, I sound so hostile to the genre, but honestly, I really want to like it, and I keep trying to find titles I’ll enjoy. Trouble is, I’ve found nothing. I’m sure I must just not be looking at the right things. I admit, I originally searched out stories that I thought would be less focused on explicit sex, because I thought those might have more of the things I’m really looking for in my fiction, but it’s possible the opposite is true. Perhaps the stories I’ve been reading are really intended for younger readers, and I’d be better off with the more adult titles. On the other hand, I’m really not interested in just reading porn. So I don’t really know where to turn. I’m hoping, as I said, to find some help in Lissa’s reviews, but I’d take any suggestions here too. I’d also be interested in reading yuri titles, but after my BL experiences, I’ve been too scared to check them out.

Information - Games and Contests - Wheeling

Our Mission:

To locate and list the best lottery contest and sweepstakes web sites with useful content for lottery players.

To find the free lottery games and list the key elements you need to bring your lottery software to bear.

To determine the best possible strategies for playing the lottery at the lowest possible

cost for the highest possible gain.

What's it all about: Have you ever tried a free search engine to locate words like: lottery, lotto, lotteries and found thousands of listings? Even advanced searches for: lottery wheeling systems, lottery results, winning numbers, free lotto games, lottery software, return hundreds of listings each. One of the reasons this occurs, many of these web sites are listed dozens of times and often their individual pages are listed as web sites as well.

What's Lotto-Logix doing about it: We're trying to limit our list to one or two links per site. We're trying to group sites under what they do best, ie: results, software, information. We try to give you an idea what you will find there, ie: articles, news, tips, statistics, books, freeware, shareware, software, programs, predictions, wheels, wheeling systems, etc.

What's in it for us: Our goal is to win the lottery and we hope to reach that goal by helping you to do the same. No one has all the answers to this problem, we hope to bring the pieces of the puzzle together under one roof where everyone can help fit them together. The lottery is like an onion, when you think you know it all, you find another layer and wonder if that is the core truth.

What about that lotto software: Some people don't believe in lottery software at all. We believe the commercial quality product does 90% of what it is supposed to, ie: Store, chart and track winning numbers. Predictions, that's another story, but still useful to determine where in their predicted (or what ever other term they choose to use) distribution of numbers, the winning numbers come from most often. Lottery software that lets you import your own wheels and wheel up to all the numbers in your Cash 3, Pick 5 or Pick 6 game can be very useful, those that also allow you to filter those combinations, extremely useful.

What about those free lotto games: We're trying to locate and list all the free online lottery games with decent prizes, fair odds, that use real state drawings for their winning numbers. Some people ask us why we don't list all the games, especially those that advertise a lot. Well we're thinking of adding a link-farm page just for those games that want to pay a few cents for clicks or sign-ups to help cover the cost of this page, but we're not really excited about it. All too often such games have outrageous odds and demand some form of intangible consideration from their players beyond a visit to a sponsors page.

Can we improve your odds: The only way to improve your odds of winning a grand prize jackpot worth millions of dollars, is to play more tickets. However, it is possible to improve your odds of winning lower tier prizes while waiting to win the jackpot. It is also possible to devise strategies that watch for certain events to come around, and of course we have our special Lotto-Logix wheels.

Mon premier Yaoi In the Walnut Toko Kawai

Mon premier Yaoi. In the Walnut, Toko Kawai

de Yoko Kawai

2002 – Taifu Comics, 2012

man

(série en cours, T2 prévu le 25/10/12)

L’histoire :

In the Walnut .
