The Young Protectors Webcomic Archives

The Young Protectors Webcomic Archives

CONTINUE PLEASE it seems interesting

I’m absolutely loving this comic. It’s like the Young Avengers + X-Men, just with more gay. (though the young Avengers really does highlight on Billy and Teddy’s relationship) I’m hooked!

MOAR. This is safdafs *A*

I’m not into yaoi in particular, but I like the art and the superhero angle here, and never minded a little romance in my comics. You’ve got a new reader.

I love this as always. I can’t wait for the new page

Hehe. Glad to hear it. (And we have two bonus pages in a row coming up now, so hopefully you won’t have to wait too long…)

You’re very welcome, Juliet! Thank you so much for the very kind words!

The Yaoi and Shounen ai club For those who like bishies on bishies

The Yaoi and Shounen ai club For those who like bishies on bishies

Since I didn't see one here, this had been on my mind for some time.

If we have a 'More male club' and a 'Girl only! club', why not a yaoi/shounen ai club to complete the set? I know not every female figure collector is a yaoi fangirl, and not every male figure collector is an yaoi hater either, so I wanted to make a club for people who just love yaoi/shounen ai, and love to talk about it

So yeah, feel free to make a topic about your fav couple (canon or not canon), fangirl/boy about a new anime, manga, game or whatever! Just respect each others preferences, and be nice

The Top 10 Gay Manga

man

The Top 10 Gay Manga

Posted on 08/09/12 at 12:00 PM in Articles. Columns by Molly McIsaac

Alan Scott and Northstar weren’t the first. Gay relationships have been part of manga for a long while, and I’ve we’ve put together the Top 10 Gay Manga.

Gravitation by Maki Murakami

Gravitation is certainly a staple of yaoi (male/male love) manga. It began in the mid 90s and continued until the early 2000s. It’s spawned a pretty epic anime and even people who don’t habitually gay manga seem to really adore this series. It’s about an aspiring singer named Shuichi Shindou and his band Bad Luck, which he is trying to vault into fame.  One day, Shuichi is working hard on some lyrics for a song and they blow into the path of a brooding, tall stranger – who immediately dismisses the lyrics that Shuichi has worked so hard on as utter garbage. Our protaganist is deeply hurt, but he is intrigued by the stranger… and that eventually leads to love.

This is a pretty ADD manga. It is VERY classically anime: Explosive nosebleeds, unexplainable random appearances of monsters, lots of hyper yelling, strange tangents, etc. But it has enough of a storyline to keep you riveted even through all of the silliness. It’s a light hearted read with the subtext of a really great love story underneath.

Loveless by Yun Koga

Loveless mostly has Yaoi subtexts (as in very few overtly yaoi scenes in it), and has a riveting and fascinating overlay. It is the story of catboys and catgirls: except they lose their “neko” (cat) features upon losing their virginity (thus this manga has a strong reflection on sexuality in society as well). It focuses on the life of the 12 year old catboy protagonist, who is looking into his brother’s mysterious death. He discovers that his brother was murdered by a secretive organization called “Seven Moons”, and is suddenly sucked into a seedy underground rife with battles, honor challenges, and magic.

It’s worth a read if you’re into really unique storylines. Loveless is certainly one of the most interesting manga I have read in a long time.

Strawberry Panic! by Sakurako Kimino and Chitose Maki

Strawberry Panic! is a collection of whimsical short stories involving lesbian (or Yuri) relationships between middle school and high school aged girls. The stories are mainly stand alone (with some correlation between characters) and revolve around 12 different girls at different times. They all attend the same boarding schools. It is a lighthearted and “slice of life” manga, a look into the intricate relationships of schoolgirls. And the art is adorable!

Kashimashi by Satoru Akahari

Some argue that Kashimashi isn’t a true Yuri manga. Why? Because initially the main character is a boy, but he is changed into a girl when a spaceship lands on top of him and he is healed back to life. Personally, I still count it – which is why it’s still on this list!

This story has two awesome things: all girl love triangles in a Japanese highschool setting and an alien who has come to earth to observe human relationships like some sort of more intelligent and sophisticated Invader Zim. It is rife with angsty teenager feelings, detached commentary on romance and affection from the alien character, tangled social webs, and kawaii (cute) art. I seriously love this manga.

Revolutionary Girl Utena by Chiho Saito

While on the surface Utena looks like a typical magical girl manga, it goes so much deeper than that. It’s based around the main character: a tomboyish girl named Utena who wants to be a prince (she dresses and behaves like one). She becomes the white knight for a classmate named Anthy who is in an abusive relationship, challenging Anthy’s abuser to a duel.

Revolutionary Girl Utena has some of the most beautiful art I have ever seen, surreal undertones of magic, a LOT of yuri subtext and intense romantic awkwardness.

Challengers by Hinako Takanaga

This might be a pretty hardcore statement, but: I think Challengers is my favorite yaoi manga. It is light hearted, adorable, silly, but sometimes very intense. The story of a college student and a Japanese businessman who are falling in love without realizing it, their meddling friends, their strange living arrangements, the humorous situations they get themselves into it. It also addresses homophobia with one of the main character’s brothers, and has some of the most lively and sweetly awkward dialogue I have ever read. Challengers just makes me happy – it’s a great love story and is entirely relate able no matter what sexual orientation you identify with.

Red Blinds the Foolish by est em

A brooding, dark, angsty manga about the love between a bullfighter and a butcher. Prepare yourself for sex and ever ratcheting angst, with rich, beautiful artwork and historical accuracies.

  Antique Bakery by Fumi Yashinaga

When I was trying to think of manga to include on this list, I literally started giggling when I thought of Antique Bakery . Yes, it’s that cute and cheerful. It’s the story of four men who work in a bakery and the stories revolve around their every day lives and struggles as they keep the bakery running, work with customers, and deal with entangled romantic webs.

Maka-Maka by Torajiro Kishi

I would describe Maka-Maka as a very honest manga, as it involves a very real storyline – two women who do not communicate well verbally, but express their intense feelings for one another through sex. A lot of sex. Especially in public places. I wouldn’t necessarily call Maka-Maka pornographic as it tackles sex and sexuality in a very tasteful, poignant way, but it is not to be read by people who think naked ladies all up on one another are icky (but really, who thinks that?)

Cantarella by You Higuri

Cantarella is a richly historical manga set during the Renaissance. It has a lot of religious overtones (deals with the devil, aspirations to be Pope, etc) which is interestingly contrasted to the fact that it is a yaoi manga. This entire comic is incredibly dark, beautiful illustrated, and worth reading if you’re a fan of genuinely honest historical comics (it has nods to a lot of real historical figures!)

Are you a fan of yaoi or yuri manga? What are the best ones you have read? Let us know in the comments below!

Molly McIsaac has way more manga than she knows what to do with, which helps her out when she writes these top 10 articles. You can follow her rantings and odd stream of conciousness on her twitter .

Furious Seven Rant! (Quotes From A Facebook Conversation)

Furious Seven Rant! (Quotes From A Facebook Conversation)

They just gave up on writing a good emotional action story

I actually don’t know who wrote 7 but it doesn’t seem like any of the 4-6 writers were involved. Such a shame. This movie had so much potential as an awesome one shot adventure that could leave Paul Walker on a soaring note. Instead, they wrote a soulless mesh of action movie cliché’s, added an unnecessary second plot that ruined the tone, pacing, and style of the movie, and added a kinda sloppy Paul Walker tribute at the end.

They abused Dom like a dead horse while giving him cheesy dialog, underused literally EVERY OTHER MEMBER of Dom’s crew. reinterpreted Dom and Letty’s rebellious outlaw love story as a fucking Twilight teen romance. Used slapstick humor on a character who not only didn’t deserve it, but should’ve been shown WAY more respect! (Hector was not only a character NO ONE wanted to see punched in the face, BUT FOR FUCKS SAKES, HE IS THE GUY THAT INTRODUCES BRIAN TO THE RACING WORLD IN THE FIRST PLACE!!)

And don’t even fucking get me started on “The street always wins”.

The action scenes had no heart and very little logic to back them up. At least when Dom rescues Letty in mid air in the sixth movie, yes the stunt is ridiculous but there’s enough well established emotional tone and motivation for you as a viewer to not care. Because it feels like it means something. The last big action sequence didn’t feel like it meant anything. Yes you were told the stakes of the mission but there was no sense of haste or meaning. It was watching a cat with a drone play with three mice until Daddy Dwane stops it all. Show me any other FF action scene from 1-6 and I can instantly feel the emotional weight behind it.

But that’s just what I got from watching it. Its cool that you enjoyed the movie. But in my opinion, F7 stepped on the soul of the franchise.

AND THE DESTRACTING AMOUNTS OF BOOTY SHOTS. Yes every Fast movie needs a traditional booty shot. Its a way of paying homage to the franchise and paying tribute to where it all started. But there’s a right way and a wrong way. The right way is to have ONE, MAYBE TWO booty shots…TOPS, and they should only last up to 3 seconds. The wrong way is having FUCKING FOUR OF THEM and each lasting EIGHT FUCKING SECONDS AT LEAST! Ugh

5 and 6 were obviously the best. It just sucks that 7 was so bad. Like I wouldn’t even be this mad at it if it was at least as good as 2. Ya can’t go worse than your already worst movie (which is at least still watchable BTW). But damn. Like…damn. Lol

Favorite Japanese recipe sites

favorite Japanese recipe sites

recipes come before food

As I mentioned in the blog and I , my manga reading and anime watching tend to lead to Japanese-food cooking, which I guess is now leading to yaoi-food blogging.

The cooking piece of the process usually starts out with a way-too-enthusiastic recipe search. I’ve accumulated an embarrassingly large collection of recipes. Over the years, I’ve settled on a few favorite recipe sites, and I thought I’d list them for you, in case you happen to find yourself in a manga-inspired cooking mood, sans recipe.

Just Hungry   and sister site Just Bento

man

The Just Hungry blog has been around since 2003. It’s written by Makiko Itoh, who goes by Maki. Although she was born in Tokyo, Maki-san has lived in a variety of places around the world, most recently in France. As someone who has had to figure out how to make homestyle food when she’s far, far from the grocery stores of home, Maki-san writes recipes that balance authenticity with international practicality (useful for those of us who don’t have access to the many convenience products that are hard to find outside of Japan).

As you might expect, after 11 years of blogging, she has an extensive recipe stash, so when I go to her site I tend to find what I’m looking for. Maki-san generally makes her recipes very straightforward and easy to follow — even when you’re dealing with a dish or ingredient that’s completely new, she makes it approachable. Usually the recipes I get from her turn out well.

Like many latecomers, I found Maki-san through her published cookbook: The Just Bento Cookbook . In truth, I’d like to plug her book (because the recipes are good), but you can find most of the recipes, or an equivalent, on her   Just Bento website, so if you’re an online recipe clipper, I’d stick with just using the site. If you’re a cookbook lover and specifically into bento, it’s a good book.

Personally, I find more of my recipes on her Just Hungry site . but when I’m looking for a recipe, it doesn’t really matter which site I go to, because no matter which one you’re on, the Search function searches both. Very convenient.

Maki-san also writes for an English-language newspaper in Japan . and she links to those articles on her site; if you’re interested in food and culture, they’re a fun read.

While I can make no claim that Maki-san is a fujoshi, she did earn points when she posted about the shounen-ai food manga . Kinou Nani Tabeta?  by Yoshinaga Fumi (yes,  Antique Bakery ‘s mangaka). Here’s the beginning of Maki-san’s description:

Kinou Nani Tabeta? is about a 40-something gay couple: Shiro, a lawyer, and Kenji, a hairdresser. The stories mostly revolve around their domestic life, and each episode features Shiro, or occasionally someone else, planning out dinner and making it, with the recipes to go along. While I was initially drawn to this manga because of the food – the recipes are actually really good, mostly simple, practical Japanese home cooking – I also fell in love with the story itself. It’s one of the nicest depictions of an ordinary middle-aged couple who happen to be gay that I’ve seen anywhere.

Kinou Nani Tabeta? by Yoshinaga Fumi

I have begun collecting these books. If you’re into cooking, Kinou Nani Tabeta? is a great read, because somewhere between half and three-quarters of the book is literally either planning to cook or actually cooking. If you can’t stand to hear a guy monologue about ingredients for ten pages, it’s not the book for you. Personally, I love it.

Oh wait, I was supposed to be talking about recipe websites. Darn it all, distracted by BL again.

Cookpad’s Japanese Cuisine section

Unlike the wide range of originally-English recipe sites online, Cookpad is a recipe website based in Japan. Used by Japanese (mostly) women. Tens of millions of them. And since the site was launched, they’ve amassed a collection of over 1 1/2 million recipes. Which does me exactly zero good, since I can’t read Japanese.

However, a few years ago, Cookpad launched an English version of their website. It currently contains more than 20,000 recipes translated from the original site . and 2,250 of those are in the traditional Japanese cuisine section. One side effect: the how-to cooking pictures are really fun (for someone who is kitchen obsessed), because you can see the pans, stoves, and other cooking implements that you wouldn’t generally find in Kansas, Dorothy.

The upside of Cookpad is that you get real recipes that real folks are making in Japan right now . In fact, the site claims that 80% of Japanese women in their 20’s and 30’s use Cookpad. The downside is that the recipes may sometimes call for ingredients not carried by the markets where you live. However, the site has a search function to help you find your closest Japanese grocery store, and I’m guessing that the recipes they’re choosing to translate are ones that don’t have too many difficult-to-obtain ingredients.

Overall, I love playing on Cookpad, because there’s a greater variety of Japanese recipes than you might find elsewhere; many sites (and cookbooks) just reproduce the “greatest hits” of Japanese cooking. Cookpad also serves as a good reminder that at home, Japanese cooks don’t just make “Japanese” food, and it can be entertaining to go through the rest of the site (the other 18,000 recipes) and take a look at Japanese twists on Italian, Indian, French and other world cuisines…

Just One Cookbook

Nami-san has been running her blog since 2011, and she has a decent store of recipes built up. She grew up in Japan but now lives in San Francisco, so as another ex-pat, she is careful about using ingredients people are likely to be able to find outside of Japan. Nami-san writes well, doesn’t overcomplicate her recipes, and presents both the recipes themselves and the how-to’s so that they are easy to follow.

The Beginner’s Guide to Anime Extra IV – Yaoi The World’s Most Feminist Pornography?

The Beginner’s Guide to Anime, Extra IV – Yaoi: The World’s Most Feminist Pornography?

There is  one particular genre of anime and manga which I would argue should be embraced in the West more than it currently is.

Now before we go on I realise that there will be some people out there who will be of the opinion that any form of pornography is sexist and should be censored. Others will argue that that if there’s a form of porn that is feminist it will be something else. Some might even argue that as a man, I can’t, shouldn’t or that I’m not qualified enough to talk about feminism at all. However, the point of this article is two-fold: to spark debate amongst people in anime, pornography and feminist circles; and to provide greater knowledge of yaoi in general to those who don’t know much about it. If you wish to argue with me about this subject, please get in touch, but for now I shall put forward my argument.

For starters, a quick explanation. “Yaoi”, which itself is part of a much large group of work known as “Boys’ Love” (BL), is the genre of male homoerotic or romantic fiction which is aimed at a female audience and is often created by female authors. There are yaoi manga, yaoi anime, yaoi novels, yaoi video games etc.

Yaoi is believed to date back to the late 1970s. At the time, male romantic stories in girl’s comics known as “shonen-ai” were starting to become popular (for a more recent example see the 1990s series Tokyo Babylon . No. 69 ). But later more sexualised stories began to emerge. The term “yaoi” is an acronym, standing for “ Ya mi nashi, o chi nashi, i mi nashi”, which translates as “No peak, no fall, no meaning.” The phrase represents yaoi as is focused on the more sexual parts, rather than the harder-to-follow plots in shonen-ai. However, it is also claimed that the phrase comes from the “Godfather of Manga” Osamu Tezuka ( Astro Boy . No. 1 and Princess Knight . No. 51 ) as an insult towards manga that were bad, and that yaoi artists appropriated in insult. There is also a joke amongst yaoi fans that “yaoi” actually stands for “ Ya mete, o shiri ga i tai” – “Stop, my arse hurts!”

Yaoi does have a very devoted following. Women who are yaoi fans are known as “fujoshi” – “rotten women”. You also have some male fans too, known as “fudanshi” – “rotten men”. One was the fandom expresses itself is with one other use of the term “yaoi”. The word in Japanese sounds like the numbers eight (ya), zero (o) and one (i). Thus “yaoi” is also known as “801”. As a result, because the Japanese date like the Americans with the month at the front, August 1st is “Yaoi Day”, which is an entire day celebrating the genre. I’ve tried to make a UK yaoi day on 8th January, but sadly not much seems to have arisen from my attempts yet.

Most yaoi tends to follow a similar pattern. You tend to have the dominant or top partner, known as the “seme”, and the submissive or bottom partner known as the “uke”. Often both are portrayed as cute or beautiful looking guys or boys. Such characters are called “bishonen”. However yaoi differ from one work to the next, as do the people creating them. Some are more romantic than erotic. Some have BDSM themes. Even rape fantasies are depicted. In face, rape is depicted rather often in yaoi. The results of one study published in 2008 found that 50% of 391 people: “thought that rape, explicit sex, sad endings, physical torture, ordinariness, bed-hopping, cruel heroes and weak heroes were all acceptable in BL manga”, while only 12% said rape should never be in BL. It has been argued by some people that because the rape scenes are only between men that: “Women are free from the baggage” in comparison to a heterosexual rape where women commonly the victims.

With regards to my argument as to yaoi being feminist, my main point is thus. Much of the anti-sex feminist criticism concern pornography is about the sexual exploitation of women. They may have a point in some cases, and it is only right to make such that women and indeed everyone working pornography treats each other with respect.

But in the case of yaoi, I would state that it is a feminist form of pornography because it is women who are in control of it. Yaoi is made by women, yaoi is made for women, and yaoi has no women being sexually exploited because it is men having sex with men, who in turn are fictional and thus are not sexually exploited themselves they do not exist. Conversely, it has been argued that yaoi is not feminist because of the lack of women depicted.

The audience I believe is key. Most porn in the world is aimed by men. Very little is geared towards women. Some may argue that lesbian pornography, or “yuri” as the anime version is called, would be more feminist, but men will still end up consuming this lesbian porn, and I apologise for making an assumption, but my guess is that most lesbians would not like that idea of men watching them while they made love. “Yuri” also has another problem in anime at least, in that the plots are very limited. Most of the yuri available in the west for example is mainly set in schools and is about the sexual awakening of girls. It often tends to be more romantic than erotic also.

If yaoi has a problem, it is in the misunderstanding of it. This is not helped by Britain’s laws on censorship which are arguably sexist themselves. Recently new porn regulations banned female ejaculation in porn, while male ejaculation is fine. In December this resulted in a “porn protest” outside Parliament which included a mass “face-sitting” demonstration. There is also general censorship of cartoon pornography in the UK, but the whole thing is very subjective. Who is to say when something is pornographic or not, or when a character is below a certain age? Also, many normal anime end up having erotic fan-fiction created about them, even if characters under 18. I don’t think anyone has seen Free! – Iwatobi Swim Club (No. 17) just for the sport.

yaoi

I personally hope that this article does stimulate debate about the merits of yaoi. I believe it to be a genre of merit for various reasons and it should be embraced as such.

Previous yaoi series covered in this column include Junjo Romantica (No. 5) , Ai no Kusabi (No. 37) , DRAMAtical Murder (No. 66) and this week’s article Love Stage!! (No. 87). For more about yaoi and BL in general, and for more on much of the source material used in this article, see the academic work “Boys’ Love Manga: Essays on the Sexual Ambiguity and Cross-Cultural Fandom of the Genre” edited by Antonia Levi, Mark McHarry and Dru Pagliassotti.

The 5 Most Baffling Sex Scenes in the History of Fanfiction

The 5 Most Baffling Sex Scenes in the History of Fanfiction

By Kate Lawrence August 17, 2008 3,275,592 Views

When traveling in the vast, anonymous, lawless expanse known as the Internet, it's a given that you're going to run into some weird shit. Maybe none of it is weirder than the world of erotic fanfiction.

This is where fans lovingly write up tales of, say, Legolas and Gimli going at it, in excruciating detail. But dig deeper and you find stories featuring such random matchups of character that it'll send your mind, and boner, reeling:

#5. Captain Jean-Luc Picard Meets Elrond From Lord of the Rings; Sex Ensues

The Scenario:

In this long, molasses-paced tale. Picard is on the most important mission of his life: a mission for fun . It seems that his superiors think he needs a vacation, and so they send him off to [insert garbled fake planet name here] to relax.

Of course, something unexplained goes horribly wrong, and he ends up crash-landing on Middle-Earth. He's found and nursed back to health by Lord Elrond. Hilarity ensues.

Oh, wait, did we say hilarity? There's actually none of that. Instead it's just four more chapters of Elrond telling Picard to stay in bed, Picard playing a flute, and Glorfindel wandering by, thinking that this is the gayest damn thing he's ever seen.

Finally, Picard admits that he "experimented" once with a French dude, and Elrond, proving himself as trustworthy and honorable as any good elf, takes advantage of Picard's fragile emotional state to make out with him:

They drew away after what seemed a lifetime but was only mere minutes. The taste of Elrond's lips still lingered in Picard's mouth as they finally looked upon each other with new eyes. Relieved sighs came from both of them as both embraced, Elrond nuzzling against Picard's neck as he rested against Elrond's shoulder.

Please pause here and take a moment to savor the thought of Hugo Weaving "nuzzling" someone. Really fix that image in your mind.

But It Really Gets Creepy When.

Elrond went further by clutching Picard with his fingers, pulling at the fabric of his slacks to feel what was underneath.

The telltale bulge in the elf's leggings stood out between them, especially with the weight it had against Picard's thigh.

Elrond moved over Picard's body like a serpent and sharply nibbled at a peaked nipple.

A few quick notes to the author: slacks are not hot. You've never heard a love song with the word "slacks" in it. Even less hot than slacks are bulging leggings, particularly when they're barely concealing an elven boner. Also, the image of Agent Smith slithering up and down Patrick Stewart's body, snake-style, is one that will haunt us until the end of our days, thanks so much.

Plausibility Factor: 2

First of all, we're going to object to the notion that Middle Earth is a separate planet from Earth, which Tolkien always insisted was in the distant past of our world, or on some other plane of existence. It's difficult to believe that any LotR fan could pleasure themselves to a story with that kind of inaccuracy.

The best explanation we can contrive is that maybe Picard entered some kind of interdimensional rift, and the ship's navigation tried to adjust by sending him to a world with a fan base as geeky as his own.

#4. Fred and George Weasley from Harry Potter Hook Up With Lance Bass of N*SYNC

The Scenario:

According to this romantic tale. Fred and George Weasley from the Harry Potter universe were at a party with Lance Bass of N*Sync fame. Beyond that, the narrative offers absolutely no explanation. Whose party was it? Was this in the wizarding world, or in the human world? Why were they both invited? Is Lance Bass secretly a wizard? No one knows.

Either way, we soon find out that Fred and George (who are twins, if you're new to the Harry Potterverse) have a sexy game they play where they do a switcheroo on their sex partners without letting them know. Cue breathy dirty-talk and weird instances of twin-language:

"Mayflower," Fred said casually, which was their code word for "Someone wants you and can I pretend to be you and have sex with them please?" "Lance Bass."

George's eyes widened. "Lance Bass wants me?"

Fred's heart sank. That wasn't the right response, as far as he was concerned. "Yeah?"

"Since when?"

"Now?"

"I didn't even know he was here," George said, looking around furtively, and Fred's heart sank even more. This didn't look promising.

Throughout the story, the writer makes the very bold assumption that Lance Bass is a treat no questionably gay wizard could bear to pass up. Bypassing even "ass," "cock" and "twin," the most commonly uttered phrase in the story is "It's Lance Bass !" as though this is all the motivation a healthy wizard boner needs.

The setting jumps around in the course of this 15,000-word epic of magic and homosexual hook-ups. It's made all the stranger by the random allusions to the magical Harry Potter world, and the odd phrases the author uses to make everything sound erotic, even when it's clearly, clearly not:

They flew to the nearest Portkey and lingered there, licking vinegar-stained fingers and making excuses not to go home until Fred grabbed George's damp hand and held it over the half-chewed acorn.

"We've got room for a fourth, right? Yeah. I think we do."

But It Really Gets Creepy When.

Capitalizing on his fame as a late-nineties pop star/astronaut hopeful, Bass manages to convince both Weasleys to accompany him home, where he not only successfully seduces them, but manages to turn them gay for each other, as well.

Lance Basstronaut

That's right; brothers Fred and George do it for Mr. Bass's benefit, and then realize they're more attracted to each other than anyone else. Keep in mind that they're identical twins. Here, narcissism reaches new, terrifying heights.

Plausibility Factor: 5

There are a number of problems here. The Weasley twins belong to a wizarding world bound to secrecy, with its own, self-contained culture (including its own music). This begs the question of how exactly they know who "It's Lance Bass! " is.

But even if we forgive all of that, we still refuse to believe that "Bye Bye Bye" has gotten anyone laid since 2001.

#3. Frank N. Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show Meets a Highlander

The Scenario:

Now we're venturing into the land of the truly bizarre. Who should stumble onto the castle of one Dr. Frank N. Furter, your friendly neighborhood tranny/cannibal from Rocky Horror Picture Show . but Methos, a 5,000 year-old immortal from the Highlander TV show and movies. How, exactly?

That's what we'd like to ask the author of this tale. The answer seems to be, "Wouldn't you like to know."

man

From the story:

How Methos had ended up taking a teaching job in the arse-end of nowhere, he wasn't entirely sure.

Well, that's convenient. Naturally, Methos chooses the rainiest, darkest night of the year to drive to the ass-end of nowhere, and naturally he gets a flat tire. So Methos chooses to walk back to a big creepy house he passed a ways back and ask for help. Five millennia haven't taught him much about self-sufficiency, apparently.

After a perfunctory and ultimately pointless introduction to all the minor characters, Methos meets Frank, and is inexplicably attracted to him.

"You're quite handsome." Methos started at the sudden declaration from the host.

"Why, thank you Dr. Furter, you're pretty good looking yourself."

"Oh, please. Call me Frank."

"Okay, Frank. You can call me Benjamin."

"Well, Benjamin. You have both looks and brains. God was having a good day when he made you." Methos smirked. Frank was clearly trying to chat him up, and Methos had to admit that he found this unique individual somewhat arousing, in a disturbing way. He hadn't swung that way in a very long time, but he thought he might be amenable.

Now, we can't speak for all of you, but we're pretty sure that if we hadn't considered man-on-man sex in several thousand years, Tim Curry in bad drag would not change our minds. In fact, it would probably pretty much fucking guarantee that the idea never crossed our minds again, no matter how many more seedy encounters on back roads we lived through.

But It Really Gets Creepy When.

After the strangely short and undetailed description of the sex, Frank randomly and inexplicably tries to murder Methos, obviously unsuccessfully, since he's immortal and all. Methos flees the castle.

He ran back to his car, started the engine and floored it, ignoring the complaining squeals from the flat tyre as he headed back to the main road as fast as possible.

Were this a sensible or kind world, that sentence would have come right after "God was having a good day when he made you." Unfortunately, it is not; this is the kind of world where women are men, men are immortal, and five-thousand-year-old straight guys accept blowjobs from cross-dressing strangers.

Plausibility Factor: 4

At least these two sort of exist in the same world, unlike Captain Picard and Elrond up there.

However, even if we want to accept that a Highlander would accept a job that would place him out in the wilderness with crazed trannies and that he would get a flat "tyre," we still can't see him relinquishing centuries of repressed sexuality at the weirdly manicured hands of a sadistic drag queen.

ytmnd

Is it possible to restrict *.ytmnd.com with an exception for www.ytmnd.com? I am removing YTMNDs from articles on a daily basis, almost always containing copyvio soundtracks and having no actual relevance to the subject. See this example: [1]. If this is not possible I will keep scanning. Just zis Guy, you know? 08:23, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

In that case www.ytmnd.com must be added to MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. For en-wp you can request it here. Of course if all subdomains really should be blacklisted and are blacklisted. Max S em 09:04, 24 July 2006 (UTC) We currently have only two YTMNDs blacklisted, unfunnytruth and unfunnysequel. The two problems I'm having right now are (a) insertion of YTMND links into mainstream articles, often these have copyvio soundtracks and in any case it's not like YTMND is Saturday Night Live; and (b) the use of individual YTMNDs as cited sources in articles such as ebaumsworld - these are not admissible as sources, but no matter how often they get removed someone puts them back. Just zis Guy, you know? 10:26, 24 July 2006 (UTC) I disagree, since there are several highly notable YTMNDs that should be linked to from the YTMND article because of their relevant history to the site as a whole. These include the original YTMND, the Picard YTMND, any YTMND referenced mentioned in the media (and several reliable sources, including CNN and the New York Times, have brought up YTMNDs) and maybe the Bauman Letters Dramatic Reading YTMND. Although I agree that random YTMND insertion into articles is vandalism. Crazyswordsman. We already link to the YTMND wiki. Just zis Guy, you know? 09:22, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Why block theunfunnytruth? I don't understand what would be wrong with it. 65.27.211.52 21:15, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

The theunfunnytruth (I believe) would be a most beneficial lnk for the Scientology article. You can clearly see the refrences for the information at the end and it does not "make up" information to criticize the Sci Church. This is a view which has been robustly rejected by editors of that article. 62.73.137.190 13:00, 21 August 2006 (UTC) I was thinking of putting a new section in Scientology_controversy after 'External Links', called 'External Links which reference this Wikipedia article', and putting the unfunnytruth ytmnd in there. It would be a reciprocal link because unfunnytruth references that specific Wikipedia entry. It would also be appropriate because most of the page views coming to that page are from presumably previous viewers of that ytmnd because of its popularity. Fame begets fame. Actual link would be titled 'Unfunny[sic] Truth' and description would say 'Major contributor to the current controversy'. Sounds good, no? Based on ongoing difficulties with YTMND sites, I would suggest wikis who need to link to such a site add that site to their whitelist, and the complete *.ytmnd.com be added to Spam blacklist. - Amgine / m | n 03:11, 2 September 2006 (UTC) Hmm, we'll have to do some work[2] before blacklisting. Max S em 06:09, 3 September 2006 (UTC) Indeed. I don't mind doing it, either. I think that www. is OK for the site and a few related articles, but any other YTMND added is almost invariably spam. Another ten out of mainspace today, including the Unfunny Truth, which appears to have been linked despite being blacklisted. Just zis Guy, you know? 09:21, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

As of today there are four links to ytmnds other than www. or wiki. [3]. Of those only one is in main space, and the source for its inclusion is too blurred to be readable (although it's repeated in text on one of the two linked sources). Just zis Guy, you know? 13:13, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Support . we need an en.wp sysop to whitelist www.ytmnd.com and wiki.ytmnd.com. BTW, is there a way to redirect a user to subdomains from www.ytmnd.com? Max S em 07:36, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

After a lot of work and some lengthy discussions on the en:YTMND talk page I think we have reached the point where I can bring a proposal here. As you know, YTMND is a popular website and we have an article on it which discusses some of the "fads" it generates. There is, however a problem with linking direct to YTMNDs as (a) they often use a Flash preloader (contrary to external link guidelines on active content requiring external players); (b) many of the soundtracks are copyright violations (contrary to external link guidelines on copyrighted content) and (c) they are constantly added to mainspace by fans, despite often being of little or no importance (e.g. en:Pi. [4] ). There appears to be a consensus at en:Talk:YTMND that in discussing fads we should link to the YTMND wiki article on the fad (which avoids both the active content and the copyright issue). We have already blocked two YTMNDs for being spammed to the project, and what I'd like to suggest, to save the daily lnksearch and prune tedium, is to blacklist *.ytmnd.com and whitelist wiki.ytmnd.com and www.ytmnd.com. This will prevent the prolific spamming of YTMNDs either by good faith but misguided fans, or by those aiming to promote fads for googlebombing purposes (as we saw with the unfunny truth fad), it will prevent things like the problems we had with en:safety when the Safety Not Guaranteed fad was doing the rounds (or at least mitigate the problem), it might help to avert another en:Brian Peppers fiasco and I think will improve the project and also the image of the many good YTMND members who are editors here, since all YTMNDers tend to get tarred with the same brush as each new fad is spammed. Just zis Guy, you know? 08:55, 26 September 2006 (UTC) Added to the EN Wikipedia white-list at [5]. Zscout370 02:24, 2 October 2006 (UTC) Thanks. So, can we add the balance to the blacklist now? I rmoeved another four YTMNDs from mainspace articles today. Just zis Guy, you know? 12:31, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

For a quick overview see [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] Jsmorse in fact admits he is Joe Morse the co-owner of the website and all links introduced either relate to Joe Morse's book on dieting or his business as a logo creator. When I saw this comment, I was like "huh? Aren't they already blacklisted?" And yes, they were - until Pathoschild removed them in this ill-advised edit a few days ago. I have restored them now. Raul654 14:26, 10 October 2006 (UTC) Pathoschild removed them because Brandt's sites stopped redirecting months ago. Raul654 restored them, calling Pathoschild's edit "ill-advised," and also restored the inaccurate comment that Brandt's sites are redirecting. Therefore, Raul654's edit is based on a lie, whereas Pathoschild's edit is based on the truth. Pathoschild also queried a couple of IRC channels before taking action, and heard no objections. Raul654 acted on impulse, and didn't consult anyone. Now I ask you, who is "ill-advised" -- Pathoschild or Raul654? 68.89.130.94 20:51, 10 October 2006 (UTC) Per guidance from Foundation, we should not link to sites which directly attack or violate the privacy of Wikipedia editors. This seems like a reasonable rule to me; I guess the reason could be changed for clarity but the fact of it being blacklisted is I hope generally accepted as prudent. The genre is frequently written by female writers and its targeted audience is of female readers who relish in the boy love story lines as they are also known as. The characters are usually drawn as stunning men who fall under 2 character styles: the uke and the seme.

The uke character is the much softer, gentler male character while the seme is the more assertive of the two. However, these generalized role types are not always persistent. To maximize the intensity of the story lines, some creators have applied the switching of the roles where the uke character takes on the seme behavior and the seme becomes the uke.

The appeal of yaoi among women has continuously increased due to its different take on relationships. This is in part due to the persistent boy-girl archetypal relationship in anime and manga which promptly loses its’ appeal for some female fans. For these types of fans, they discover that the boy-boy relation is much more exciting and satisfying for them.

A few fans also get joy in writing and creating their own yaoi stories. They take non-intimate characters and transform them into romantic, sexual relationships. One example is the well-known action anime, Naruto, has been the concentration of a number of fan created yaoi stories.

Yaoi maybe a small portion of the Japanese animation and fiction community still it has lent its self to well-known yearly conventions and merchandise. Each year in San Francisco, in the month of October the yearly Yaoi Convention (sometimes referred to as Yaoi-Con) is held. Here, supporters round up for 3 days to experience their adoration and love for yaoi with other liked minded folks.

During the other months of the year, enthusiasts can  obtain yaoi merchandise like yaoi DVD’s, tops, character goods, accessories and other unique products from a yaoi shop.

(1) Your First Semester

A. Choosing a Research Advisor:

1. Financial backing

As in almost every other aspect of life, money has a non-trivial impact on your graduate progress.

How often or for how long are you expected to teach? Every semester, once a year, or whenever the group may fall upon financial hard times? If you can get into the lab right away, obviously this will help you to complete your work sooner. ( See Fig. 1 )

Will he/she sponsor your trip to scientific meetings? Meetings are important for making professional contacts as well as learning of other efforts in your area.

man

2. Creativity

How much flexibility will you have with your research project? Will you create your own project or assume a current one?

3. Tenure?

Different people have different philosophies on what it takes to get a Ph.D. The national average is about six years; however, at Iowa State, pay deductions begin if you have not earned your Ph. D. by the end of your fifth year.

Generally, there are many factors that influence how long it will take you to complete your Ph.D. work. Will you have to learn a new technique or build a new piece of equipment before you can begin your research? Are there extra courses you will have to take to help you understand your work? Don't forget to factor in teaching. These are not necessarily negatives; in fact such activities often serve as valuable learning experiences, resulting in a deeper understanding of your project. Also, keep in mind that shorter isn't necessarily better. When you leave here you should be an independently thinking researcher. The bottom line is that it takes a lot of work to get a Ph. D.

4. Expectations for quantity of work

Are there a certain number of hours per week that your research advisor will expect you to work? Are those hours expected to fall during a certain period of the day? Does it matter what time you come to work in the morning?

5. When are you expected to begin research?

In some groups you will begin doing research your second (or even first) semester, while in other groups you will not begin until your first summer. It is important to understand what is expected of you.

Considering your research advisor's personality

For most people, there are more things to life than a research project. When choosing a research advisor, it is important to consider how his/her personality fits with yours. Remember that you will be working closely with this person for the next 4-5 years. Any significant personality conflicts will only be magnified over time. How does your work ethic compare with his/hers? Are you expected to work independently and ask few questions? Will your advisor be willing to go to bat for you? Do you want a research advisor who is friendly and outgoing, who organizes the occasional social event (i.e. the group goes out for drinks after an important event like a seminar given by a group member, or just goes out for the occasional Friday night after work)? Are you less interested in that, and more interested in someone who will be serious about your work and push you to get research done, and papers out right away? Probably you want a little bit of both, and it will be up to you to decide what ratio is best for you. This is not a matter to be trivialized; it will undoubtedly have a significant impact upon the nature of your time as a graduate student at Iowa State University. As noted elsewhere in this manual, your happiness is closely related to how productive you are and subsequently how long it will take you to complete your graduate degree.

The above statement applies to the rest of the members of a research group, but to a lesser degree. Consider how the group members work together. Are they competitive and spiteful or are they eager to lend their assistance? No matter how great of a researcher you are or how independently you prefer to work, there will come a time when you will want or need help from someone else in your group.

Have a backup choice

There is no guarantee that the person you choose will be able to take you as their student. Sometimes there are too many students and not enough room in a research group. In this case you will have to join a different group. This is more common in some divisions than others, but you can get an idea of whether or not this will be an issue by talking about it with the people whose groups you are considering.

Attend the research talks by professors, Chem 579 (and this means going to the 8:00 am talks)

Even if you are not even remotely considering joining a professor's group, go to the research talk anyway. You should be exposed to the work that is going on in all of the research groups at Iowa State. Material from these talks has been known to appear in cumes and orals.

Talk to possible research advisors early

Not only does it bother professors when people talk to them at the last minute, but it will also help you to have more time to think about your options. Maybe you will need to follow up with more specific questions once you've met with everyone you're interested in. If you already know whose group you plan to join, then it is an especially good idea to start the interview process early.

Talk with graduate students

Speak with students in the groups that you are considering joining and with students outside those groups. Find out what their impressions of the different groups are. What do they like and dislike about the group they're in?

Go to group meetings

Almost every research group meets regularly, and you are usually welcome to attend these meetings. This is a great way to get a feel for how the group interacts, and also the extent of the professor's involvement in each student's project. In group meetings you will be exposed to the research that is being conducted from the point of view of the graduate students who are performing it. Check with the professor for the time and location.

B. Choosing a Major:

Introduction

There are four major disciplines or "Majors" from which to choose: Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical. In addition, you can choose to minor in any one of the three non-major disciplines. When you first arrive, each of you is asked in which discipline(s) you are most interested. This choice is by no means binding. It only serves to guide the student and their temporary advisor when deciding which classes to take and where to begin looking for a permanent advisor at the end of the semester.

Major vs. Major Professor

The choice of a Major, by nature, is very much related to the choice of a Major Professor. However, there is a great deal of flexibility, so keep an open mind when deciding. Many professors accept students in different majors, so don't worry if you want to, for example, major in Organic but work someone who primarily does research in Inorganic chemistry. If you are interested in their research, go talk to them. Find out who is working for them. In most cases, a multidisciplinary group provides a wonderful chance to be exposed to many different areas of chemistry and makes you more valuable to employers. Above all, remember that you can always switch majors. It could cause you to have to start over with cumes, research, and classes, so choose carefully and talk it over with your advisor and other students who have gone through it before.

Below is a web address of the Chemistry faculty and disciplines in which they are involved. We don't know everything! Additional information can be found on the department's website at http://www.chem.iastate.edu/faculty/

Co-Majoring

You have the option of majoring in two subjects at once. This is not really a double major because a co-major generally involves doing half of the requirements of each major (e.g. cumes and coursework). This option typically involves choosing two Major professors (one from each co-major discipline) who must decide how the programs will be divided to form the co-major. The extra hassle and confusion involved tend to outweigh the benefits; so few students take this option. Again, if you are interested, talk to your advisor and other students (especially co-majors) to find out if it would be good for your situation.

If you decide to do this, make your decision early in your first semester or expect to exceed five years in completing your Ph.D. You and your co-advisors set up the program for your coursework and cume system. Your POS committee will offer advice on your chosen program. Most important --get your program set up early so you don't waste time taking unnecessary classes.

Minors and Areas of Specialization

These two options offer a more hassle-free alternative to a co-major. They are designed to make a student more marketable after graduation by giving them a broader base of experience. Look in your Department of Chemistry Graduate Manual for a list of minors and areas of specialization and the corresponding requirements. As always, consult with your advisor and other students if one of these options sounds appealing.

Coursework

To complete your degree in a timely fashion you should complete your coursework and cumes as soon as possible. Research can be completed more quickly when you can focus your efforts. Each discipline has coursework requirements, but some advisors recommend/mandate that you take additional classes. Graduate level coursework is significantly more intense than undergraduate courses. It is important to stay focused and manage your time wisely, especially when your responsibilities begin to multiply (classes, teaching, and research). Keep in mind that if a 3.0 grade point average is not maintained you may be placed on academic probation.

(2) Communication in the Workplace:

It is imperative to have an open line of communication with your research advisor, as well as with any coworkers in the laboratory. As you will soon see, your workplace will be composed of many types of people. From differing nationalities to differences in opinion, everyone will see the world with a unique point of view. To ensure that your research is performed in an environment comfortable to you and your colleagues, we suggest following a few guidelines.

First and foremost, try to resolve the disagreement with your coworker face to face. This may offer the quickest resolution to the problem at hand. It may simply be a difference of opinion or miscommunication that has resulted in this situation, and voicing your displeasure may not only resolve the problem for both parties, but may prevent future problems from arising as well.

If problems do arise in the workplace, try not to discuss them with colleagues who are not directly involved. This can result in the isolation of other individuals and simply make the current situation worse.

If you feel that you cannot confront a colleague directly, you should consider speaking with your research advisor or group supervisor. This may seem intimidating but remember that your success as a graduate student hinges on your success within your research group. This includes, but is not limited to, your ability to communicate and work with a diverse group of individuals in the laboratory.

Should you find that you have a disagreement with your research advisor, the best choice for resolving this conflict is to speak face to face with him/her. It is not only to your advantage but also to your advisor's advantage as well to have an open line of communication within the research group. A conscientious advisor should be open to your opinions and concerns, and will work with you to improve your experience as a graduate student.

Finally, you may find that you have a concern with your major advisor that cannot be voiced directly with him/her. In this case, you should consider speaking with a member of your POS committee. They may be able to offer advice, which will aid in resolving your concerns.

In conclusion, your happiness is directly correlated with the length of time you will spend as a graduate student. The unhappy student is often the student who leaves prematurely or does not graduate on time, neither of which results in the student realizing his/her full potential. ( See Fig. 2 )

(3) Getting Assistance as a Graduate Student:

1. Your major professor

Really, he or she wants you to succeed. You are a big investment. Create and maintain a good relationship with this person and he/she will smooth a lot of ground ahead of you.

2. Your POS committee

If the trouble is with the major professor or it's something you don't feel comfortable discussing with him/her, or you just want another opinion, try one of these people. They should all be willing to listen and help. It's to your advantage if they know you better before your Oral or Defense!

3. Other faculty or staff

Maybe you need to learn a new technique or want to find out how to use some library resources. There are people, for example, at instrument services and in the PSRR to help. If the problem is not chemistry-related, try anyone you feel comfortable talking to. Believe it or not, the secretaries know nearly everything and will be some of your best resources.

4. Graduate students and post-docs

Many times these people can offer support and encouragement when you need it. They can tell uplifting stories of their own experiences. They don't always have all the answers, but they are often useful. Get to know some; at the very least, you might need help moving furniture.

Historia

Algunos ejemplos son el Gerard Way /Frank Iero (Frerard), Brendon Urie /Ryan Ross (Ryden), Naruto Uzumaki /Sasuke Uchiha (Naruto), Gabe Saporta /William Beckett (Gabilliam), Mikey Way /Bob Bryar (Bobkey),Tom Kaulitz /Bill Kaulitz (Twincest).

Star Wars. X-Men. Stargate. Buffy Cazavampiros,High School Musical y Angel. Smallville y las fantasías sobre famosos reales (RPS, Real Person Slash ). Los dos primeros son, a su vez, muy populares en la fanfiction escrita en español .
