Bonjour mes chers amis, installez-vous tranquillement devant la table basse. Ne me regardez pas comme ça. Je vous rassure, nous avons beau être le premier avril, je n'ai prévu aucune blague et je ne vous ai rien préparé de plus que la chronique habituelle. Les seuls poissons que vous verrez aujourd'hui sont ceux qui ornent ma théière. Mais comme le week-end prochain, les cloches vont venir, j'ai décidé de faire une chronique autour du cacao. Donc pour accompagner le thé au chocolat et à l'orange, je vous offre de petits sablés. Qui dit chocolat, dit doux amer, et quoi de mieux pour illustrer ce goût qu'un amour passionnel entre gay et hétéro pour rester dans le thème.

Ce poème a été improvisé suite à un challenge sur le forum Yaoi brûlant. Je ne l’ai pas remanié, je préfère le laisser ainsi ^^

Dust Jackets vs. No-Jackets

Because I am too damn lazy to write reviews (seriously, folks, it's hard to read a manga 3 times in a row unless it is an epic!), I will provide topics for discussion (just as good, in my opinion).

When I pick up one of my jacketed books, I tend to focus on its quality rather than its contents. I know the publisher wanted me to get it because it dolled it up so I would THINK that it's a good buy. The only publisher who has the Dust-jacket down to an art is DQ. The gorgeous jackets accompany the flimsy and gentle books quite well, whereas June's jackets clothe a pretty large, heavy, and stiff tome. Same with 801, except smaller.

While this discussion is all very nit-picky, it's actually what companies consider before marketing themselves. Kitty Media and Be Beautiful, being two of the first English Yaoi companies, had no idea that fans might want the pretty dust-jackets and colour pages. As for this fan, I can do without.

Hey there every peoples!

Looks like we got the second warrior name of season 3! So now we not only have Hannibal to look forward to, but also Crazy Horse (as evidence by a guy in a video saying “I’m a Crazy Horse expert” in a video). Can’t wait to see what other warriors they got in mind for season three.

Anyway on to another match up. I figured I’d give you guys a break from the “primitive” warriors and do a matchup between the soldiers of ancient civilizations. One hails from the bronze age Middle East, the other from the early days of one of the best known nations in the world. This is Egyptian vs. Yayoi soldier!

My Egyptian soldier is the classic image of an Egyptian soldier, meaning he hails from the New Kingdom. The New Kingdom lasted from the 16 th century bc to the 11 th century bc and marked the pinnacle of Egyptian power and prosperity. The New Kingdom produced the man who is thought to be the greatest Pharaoh of them all: Ramses II. Under his command, Egypt became a military machine and fought to expand the empire. Their most famous battle was the Battle of Kadesh where Ramses and his army fought to a draw against the Hittites, an equally powerful empire.

Yayoi soldier

The Yayoi period in Japan began in 300 bc when the previous Jomon culture came into with outside nations. The Yayoi culture stretched from southern Kyushui to northern Honshu and lasted until about 300 ad. The Wei chroniclers of China give us a contemporary account of the later Yayoi period ( called the Wei Chih) but it is uncertain how much of it can be trusted. According to them Japan was at this time divided into warring tribal communities. A leader named Himiko, who was seen by no one but her servants, organized many of these communities into a confederacy. She was apparently on friendly terms with China, since the chronicles tell us that the Wei Emperor sent her many gifts. What is more, six years later he gave a military title to her envoy. This indicates that she was fighting against a rival land. She apparently lost, since the Wei Chih just says that she died.

Short range

Egyptian: Khopesh. Crafted in Sumer in the 3 rd millennium bc the khopesh or sickle sword spread throughout the middle east. The Egyptians adopted the kohpesh from the Hyksos and it played a part in their rise to power. The khopesh isn’t a true sword but is more akin to an axe. Even then it can’t really be classed as an axe either, because while axes made percussion cuts, the khopesh was used to slash like a saber. A standard khopesh measure between 20 and 24 inches longs.

Yayoi: Pick ax. A two foot wooden shaft with an iron or bronze blade inset. Basically a shorter version of the halberd.

Egyptian: spear. A 6 foot wooden shaft with a head made of bronze. Just another spear, plain and simple.

Yayoi: Halberd. A longer version if the pick axe. Its presence indicates contact with China, where it was a common weapon of Han Dynasty soldiers. The halberd had a bronze or sometimes iron head.

Egyptian: Throw stick. Told you the boomerang wasn’t restricted to Australia! The throw stick was actually not uncommon among Egyptian infantry, being cheap and easy to use. While maybe not the most effective weapon, it was used with some regularity until the end of the New Kingdom so it must have worked to some extent.The eamples below were found in the tomb of King Tut.

Yayoi: bow and arrow. Let’s face it; we are going to keep seeing this one again and again, given how it’s found in most cultures worldwide.

Special weapons

Egyptian: Mace axe. The mace axe evolved from the middle kingdom mace. When the mace was no longer able to break through enemy armor, the shaft above the mace head was extended and a bronze ax blade was attached. The mace head was enlarged and the shaft lengthened to allow two handed use. The ax head was the primary striking implement, but the mace part was still capable of bone breaking blows.

Yayoi: Sukanto tachi. A bronze sword measuring up to 30 inches long.

Egyptian: New Kingdom infantry wore little armor (see image at top of post). They mainly wore a padded cotton shirt and some weird looking breach cloth. They carried a large wooden shield faced with ox hide. The shield could be slung over the back when two hands were required to wield a weapon.

Yayoi: The Yaoi soldier carried a shield as tall as that of the Egyptian’s but narrower. The only other armor they had was a wooden cuirass.

1.   Build a Fire   – Fire produces heat and light, two basic necessities for living.  At some point in your life this knowledge may be vital.

2.    Operate a Computer   – Fundamental computer knowledge is essential these days.  Please, help those in need.

3.  Use Google Effectively   – Google knows everything.  If you’re having trouble finding something with Google, it’s you that needs help.

4.  Perform CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver   – Someday it may be your wife, husband, son or daughter that needs help.

5.  Drive a Manual Transmission Vehicle   – There will come a time when you’ll be stuck without this knowledge.

6.  Do Basic Cooking   – If you can’t cook your own steak and eggs, you probably aren’t going to make it.

Dans la sphère de l'édition manga en France, on nous propose bien évidemment des titres japonais mais aussi coréens et chinois voire français. Quelques magazines offrent une bonne vue sur l'actualité manga et l'évolution du marché voire sur la culture asiatique en général ainsi que des chroniques. Cela dit aucun ne se penche sérieusement sur la culture du manga en portant un regard objectif et critique sur son évolution.

Une « revue d'étude sur la bande dessinée japonaise »

C'est à cet état de fait que comptent remédier les éditions H, pilotées par un grand connaisseur en matière de manga Hervé Brient, avec leur revue 'Manga 10 000 images'. Le premier numéro de cette excellente « revue d'étude sur la bande dessinée japonaise » est consacré au Yaoi sous le titre « Homosexualité et manga. le yaoi ».

Le yaoi est une catégorie de manga au même titre que le shojo, le shonen, le seinen ou encore le josei, qui met en scène des relations homosexuelles entre hommes. Enfin c'est vrai en France mais pas tout à fait au Japon. Comme cela arrive régulièrement lorsque les termes relatifs aux mangas sortent des frontières du Japon, ils sont quelque peu transformés.

Yaoi et Boy's love

C'est par exemple le cas pour « otaku », qui désigne en France un fan de manga, d'anime ou d'OAV, alors qu'au Japon ce terme a un sens plus fort. il désigne une personne plutôt asociale qui est obsédée par sa passion (informatique, jeux en réseau, manga, figurine. ). En ce qui concerne le yaoi, ce terme est appliqué au Japon uniquement pour une production hors des circuits commerciaux. Il existe un équivalent au terme yaoi qui lui sert à désigner un ouvrage diffusé par les circuits commerciaux traditionnels c'est Boy's love.

Une dernière précision sur le yaoi et le boy's love pour bien situer la thématique de 'Manga 10 000 images', les oeuvres relevant de cette catégorie sont dessinées par des femmes pour des femmes hétérosexuelles. Il existe encore une autre catégorie pour la production de manga à destination d'un public homosexuel masculin. Cela dit une partie du lectorat yaoi (et boy's love) s'intéresse au manga gay et vice versa.

Lancer cette revue avec le thème du yaoi pourrait paraître saugrenu, et pourtant c'est un genre en pleine expansion au Japon avec une très grande communauté de lecteurs, très active et de toute évidence très influente. Dans nos contrées occidentales, il arrive à petits pas, l'essentiel de la production passant par les circuits de fans. Il aurait donc était difficile de passer à côté de ce phénomène. L'étudier en premier numéro marque très clairement la volonté de l'éditeur d'explorer toutes les facettes du manga de manière sérieuse et approfondie.

Une revue très pointue

Il faut bien avouer que 'Manga 10 000 images' tient bien ses promesses. Les articles sont denses, bien renseignés, riches en informations avec une réflexion poussée qui prend en compte plusieurs facteurs. Les chroniques sont claires et permettent de se faire une idée juste des oeuvres étudiées. Vous trouverez aussi des fiches sur les auteurs marquants du genre et une nouvelle yaoi inédite en France de Benita intitulée 'Une fleur sauvage'. Vous pourrez lire aussi deux interviews une de Benita, et une de Hisako Miyoshi, vice-rédactrice en chef de la section manga de Libre Publishing.

Les articles de fond traitent de différents sujets comme. l'histoire du yaoi, « les éditeurs de boy's love », « les produits dérivés », ou « le yaoi en francophonie ». Ceux-ci permettent de faire un état des lieux. D'autres articles poussent la réflexion plus loin et proposent d'analyser « pourquoi les filles aiment le yaoi ? », de savoir si le yaoi est gay, ou encore de voir l'impact de ce genre sur la production globale en ce concentrant sur les « mangas qui se servent du yaoi pour doper leurs ventes ».

'Manga 10 000 images' est une revue incontournable

Cette revue très pointue est une mine d'informations et permet de se faire une idée précise de la thématique explorée sans se cantonner toute fois à celle-là mais en l'intégrant dans la diversité de la production. Nous vous recommandons vivement 'Manga 10 000 images', une revue essentielle pour tous les professionnels du manga, incontournable pour les otakus (au sens français du terme) mais aussi édifiante pour ceux qui voudraient en savoir plus sur le phénomène manga à travers diverses thématiques.

La revue 'Manga 10 000 images' est édité par les éditions H. Le numéro 1 sur le yaoi compte 192 pages et vous pourrez vous le procurer pour 12€. Seule ombre au tableau, il est encore difficile de la trouver en librairie, cependant vous pouvez la commander via le site des éditions H sur lequel vous trouverez aussi une liste des librairies où elle est vendue. 'Manga 10 000 images' est une revue semestrielle. Le numéro 2 sera consacré à Osamu Tezuka et devrait sortir fin novembre.
