Gay Japanese Movies & Yaoi (Boys Love) What it takes to film such genres in Japan & the actors who play such roles [Part 1/3]

Gay Japanese Movies & Yaoi (Boys Love): What it takes to film such genres in Japan & the actors who play such roles [Part 1/3]

Many would probably remember Hamao Kyosuke as the intense young promising dramatic actor in 3 of the 4 BL movies entitled Takumi Kun. These Yaoi-themed movies were extensively featured in PsychoDrama, and we have listed the 10 best BL movies [ Part 1 | Part 2 - Takumi Kun series ] from Japan as well. Certain gay-themed movies were also extensively featured - Gohatto and Big Bang Love Juvenile A (both featuring acclaimed actor Ryuhei Matsuda). Among the current 10 favorite J-movies list - features Joe Odagiri playing a gay man in Le Maison de Himiko .

But what does it takes to do a gay-themed movie in Japan? Is it taboo to show two male actors kissing (how about having sex?)

I'm pretty sure the Yaoi themed movies may have its share of audience (mostly girls who love to watch movies with a homoerotic romantic or sexual relationships between male characters) But gay movies are quite different and both have been limited in terms of release. Have you heard of any Yaoi or gay J-movies for the past 2 years? I think not.

[ Update: There are two movies one is a manga adaptation and a yaoi movie entitled Doushitemo Furetakunai starring Kosuke Yonehara and Masashi Taniguchi, already released last May. The other is yet to be released in Japan, this month, entitled Tokyo: The City of Glass, which will be reviewed here very soon ]

Perhaps the reason for the limited production of gay-themed or BL movies is that there is prejudice (even discrimination) of such movies, and the apparent "disappointment" of fans, especially if the actors are known to play roles from a different genre - say Kamen Rider or any other superhero-themed movies. There was an article @JeFusion (famous for featuring Tokusatsu, Henshin and Anime news) written back two years ago where Toku fans and those who maybe considered more "open-minded" movielovers argued quite extensively. Part of the article reads:

Yaoi has been a popular genre these past years among female fans, termed as fujoshi. And because of it, live-action movies of such came to the entertainment scene. Termed as Boys Love Movies (BL), stories of such revolves around romantic relationships between men. These stories were adapted from famous yaoi mangas and novels by famous authors.

Most of the known BL actors of today are non other than tokusatsu ones. Some of these actors started at BL and some in toku who gained so much popularity from it, especially for the fangirls. Maybe one reason of which is their physical appearances as good-looking young men. [ BL Movies: Side Career of Toku Actors? ]

The comment below probably summarized what people has to say about these movies:

I've learned so much about the Toku fandom from the last few months, whether it was the blatant, virulent racism exhibited when a black actor showed up in Kamen Rider or when it was merely HINTED that a Caucasian might be part of a Sentai team, or the rampant homophobia on display here and now.

Attention whiners: Gays exist. Actors will play them if they get paid well enough or if they like the role. Get used to it. All this whining is just reminding me of what it was like to be in high school in the 1990s, where "queer" was the biggest insult the jocks could toss out and any vague suggestion that someone might be gay was treated as if you just threatened their mother with a knife.

yaoi

Of course, I'm willing to bet that if we were talking about girls love movies starring some of the lovely young women from SS and KR, all these whiners would not only be okay with it, they'd actively be hunting those movies down so they could jerk off to them. [ read more ]

Some of the more known Japanese actors who have played gay or Yaoi characters (aside from Ryuhei Matsuda, Joe Odagiri and Masanobu Ando) are Takumi Saitoh, Baba Ryoma, Ryuunosuke Kawai, Hidenori Tokuyama, Yasuka Saitoh, and Daisuke Watanabe.

As mentioned already Hamao Kyosuke received his share of fan adulation when he appeared as Takumi in the said Yaio movies. However, he was not able to move on and play other characters with the same success. As of this writing, his last public announcement where he retires from acting remains.

Is it a jinx or (perhaps a curse) for a Japanese actor to play gay or do a seme or yuke role? Perhap not. It probably depends on the integrity of the actor - in fact, Ryuhei Matsuda's first movie - Gohatto - is a gay samurai movie (for lack of a better description) where he is pursued by older Samurai - among them Tadanobu Asano's character.

Takashi Miike's Big Bang Love Juvenile A also features Matsuda, this time he's paired with Masanobu Ando - where both their characters were imprisoned for committing violent crimes. Inside the juvenile facility, their relationship took on a deeper level.

There is no love scenes (or sex scenes) on both movies - the sexual attraction or even the romantic "interludes" were more "symbolic" rather than physical. However, Ando and Matsuda took off their clothes in an early scene.

Same goes with Joe Odagiri and Min Tanaka in Le Maison de Himiko. Their relationship is more implied without even a glimpse into their intimate relationship. In one of the movie's funniest scenes, Odagiri was flirting with the young manager who employs Kou Shibasaki - teasing the guy that he's interested in having sex with him. That scene and the dance number were probably the most revealing of all.

Compared to Yaoi or BL, the intimate scenes were more prominent - Hamao Kyosuke and Daisuke Watanabe had a few intimate scenes with hints of sex. Says the actors in an interview:

"For me, playing Takumi; he's a very shy person, but after meeting Gii, he's getting happier. He's true to himself about everything, and I think I want to be like that too."

"What was it like to play a character with a same-sex love interest?" Daisuke says that it wasn't really that weird or uncomfortable, as he'd been acting along with Hamao before, and he's easy to get along with and it didn't get awkward. Though, sometime he felt like he had had his share of boy's love, but it was a good experience. [ source ]

In Fujimi Symphony Orchestra, the two lead actors (Takasaki Shota and Arai Yusuke) went beyond mere kissing and actually engaged in sex.

The movie is a boys love story about two musicians who are part of an orchestra. Considered as a musical genius, Tonoin Kei (Yusuke Arai) became the new conductor of Fujimi much to the disappointment of Morimura Yuuki (Shota Takasaki) who is the acknowledged leader of the group. Yuuki who was smitten by one of the female musicians is unaware that the new conductor is actually in love with him. As they both struggled with their new roles, one misunderstanding led to another until a serious confrontation ensues involving the two young men. [ Read our full review ]

The sex scenes in Yaoi or BL are not without controversy. There is always the hint of rape, and such a sensitive issue cannot be taken lightly.

Some reactions of gay men regarding Yaoi follows:

The ridiculously high frequency of rape and sexual assault in yaoi is revolting. Yaoi artists make rape seem like a good thing. It's extremely offensive that they characterize gay men this way. The seme-uke trope is unrealistic and annoying. The way that the uke acts like a helpless lamb, and the seme acts like a sociopathic sex offender, is dumb and turns me off. [ read more ]

The below comment would probably described what I am trying to say about the difference between gay movies and Yaoi:

The big movie studios have not ventured into the Yaoi genre for apparent reasons. The only producers who have ventured into the BL-themed movies are small, independent producers who hire young actors not really conscious of being typecasted or perhaps they are just passionate to play Yaoi roles - be it an aggressive seme or a submissive yuke.

In Part 2, we interviewed an up and coming filmmaker yet already recognized abroad for his gay-themed Japanese movie entitled Tokyo: The City of Glass.

Shipping, Yaoi, and Why My Opinion About Both has Totally Changed

Okay, so you might remember that EONS AGO, I made this post about shipping .

yaoi

I had my head totally up my ass then, and my trials and travails on Tumblr in the past year and several months has made me realize it.

As far as the shipping of canon characters in anime, games, TV shows, etc. my opinion is relatively the same, but with slight alterations.  I don’t really care who anybody decides to ship with whom as long as said characters are not turned totally OOC.  For instance, Naruto and Sasuke or Sakura and Ino are more likely to do something along the lines of hatefucking than being absolutely lovey-dovey, googly-eyed for each other.  Same with Ichigo and Grimmjow (for all you Bleach fans).

One thing that has changed in a huge way for me, however, is yaoi as a genre.

When I first got into the world of yaoi fiction, I pretty much thought “yaoi” was just a Japanese term for stories about gay men.  I had absolutely no problem with it, and I often sought those stories more than I did anything to do with hetero romance (and I still do).  I’ve just always found stories about gay men to be really attractive.

But just recently, I read some articles about yaoi fandom that really disturbed me.  Just the way yaoi/BL/shounen-ai is written and how the characters behave (the concepts of seme and uke, in particular) makes it seem like it’s a really controlling man and a very submissive woman, just in the bodies of two pretty, young boys.  The more I look at it, it kinda conjures the image of Edward and Bella in Twilight .  In what way is that an accurate depiction of gay men?  Doesn’t seem like a really healthy relationship to me, and I wouldn’t be surprised if real gay men were offended by it.  Oh, and don’t even get me started on how prevalent rape is in yaoi… yeah, force yourself on the other guy.  He’ll love you for it.  Really.  I once saw this one yaoi OVA called Enzai . and it seemed as though every sex scene in that show involved a bunch of assholes taking their turns having their brutal way with the main character.  And Boku no Sexual Harassment .  Exactly what it says on the tin.  All I will say is, I’ll never look at corn-on-the-cob the same way again.

To bring things back to the seme/uke concept, to say that one person is always the top and the other is always the bottom is not an accurate view of gay couples.  It only feeds into the idea that yaoi is by women, for women, and geared toward appealing to what women supposedly want in relationships.  The only time I’ve ever seen anything to do with yaoi stray from this concept was in a How to Draw Manga book about yaoi by Botan Yamada.  There was one image where one of the guys was suggesting they draw straws to see who was on top, and the other guy said “Doesn’t the mood generally determine this?”  Now THAT’S realistic.  Both the guys in the image were still unrealistically pretty, but at least it was heading in the right direction.  Real gay men switch it up, try new things, do things differently every once in a while.  That’s why I wrote my TF2 OC, Damien. the way I did… I wanted him to reflect a more realistic image of gay or mainly-homo bisexual men.  He’s not always the aggressor, he’s not always the macho man, he’s not always on top in his relationship.

That, and being a fan of yaoi is not the same thing as being for gay rights (and I must say that I was guilty of this back in the day, y’know… before I educated myself more about these sort of things, and I still have a ways to go, mind you – learning is a lifelong pursuit).  I believe in gay rights because really . it is nobody’s business with whom someone falls in love, and everybody should be able to love the person they love no matter the physiological structure.  If you’re supporting gay rights just to have some sort of justification for your fantasy ships, then I have nothing to say to you.

Yaoi is a term used by Western anime and manga fans to refer to explicit male homoerotic works, generally created by women and for female readership, either canonical or fan-created. The Japanese usage of yaoi and related terms differs considerably. [1]

It is an acronym of " yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi . no mountain (ie peak; climax), no point, no meaning" [2] and in its original meaning similar to PWP. i.e. sex is the be-all and end-all of the story.

However, the term has grown to be a loose catch-all for m/m stories, even though some fans distinguish between yaoi and shounen ai according to the degree of sexual explicitness (which is categorized as lemon and lime .)

Yaoi has conventions and aesthetics that are sometimes quite different from those in fandoms for Western sources. There is a greater emphasis placed on sexual roles: a seme is the active penetrative partner in anal sex. and the uke is the receptive partner. These denote not only their preferred sexual activity, but are often used to map personality traits, and their role in the relationship. The fandom may place correspondingly greater weight on the importance of a relationship being conceived of in terms of an active and passive partner: for instance, pairing names in yaoi fiction are expected to convey not only who is involved, but what role they play. Another way of differentiating yaoi from other types of slash media is that it is marketed as female-oriented media, while the term slash doesn't define an audience, but rather just a term to define fan-made media involving male/male content.

Female fans of BL (yaoi) are known as fujoshi. aka "rotten girl", which make up a majority of the BL fan base.

Yaoi is usually used in fandoms for Japanese sources, such as anime and manga. However, when anime fans cross over into fandoms for Western sources, notably Harry Potter. they may apply yaoi conventions and aesthetics to the new source.

yaoi

The term is more or less unrelated to the phrase "my thoughts on yaoi ."

International Usage

Distinct usages:

Japan - The main contemporary catchall term in Japanese is 'BL' (for "Boys Love"). See the BL article for a more thorough discussion of Japanese terminology. Fans with a significant degree of exposure to Japanese often follow Japanese usage regardless of the local usages listed below.

North America - 'Yaoi' is used for m/m fanfic, anime, manga, and general themes. 'Shounen ai' may be used for less explicit fanfic (and other things?).

Submissions Open From March 30th 2015 – May 20th 2015

Submissions Open From March 30th 2015 – May 20th 2015

As a few of you have already noticed, yes – submissions have been re-opened. I meant to make this announcement earlier, but I got pulled away from the computer suddenly. I’m sorry if anybody was confused by the submission form suddenly re-appearing without any comment!

This open period will run until May 20th, 2015.

As explicit confirmation, since otherwise I’m sure I would get lots of messages asking: yes, this means that the prior submission period has been completely processed. All pastas slated for Crappypasta have been posted there and notifications sent to their authors, and all accepted pastas have been scheduled with their authors notified as well. This means that if you have not received any contact, it’s a safe bet that your story was rejected – you may visit the FAQ for further details on why this might be, as well as additional details on when/if you are eligible to resubmit rejected pastas.

For those of you looking to rework rejected stories or submit entirely new ones, the last two discussion posts may be of particular interest: in February, the community discussed their favorite creepypasta genres and topics. and this past month saw the inverse conversation – our least favorite creepypasta genres and topics. Please feel free to chime in if you haven’t already, as I will be using the feedback received in these posts as a barometer to help select which stories to let through when I’m on the fence. Additionally, if you’re not entirely certain whether your story idea would be well-received at this particular creepypasta community, you may find the responses in each post helpful.

Author Tag System

Tags for frequent authors have been requested enough that we’re finally going to do this thing!

As you can see on the sidebar, I’ve introduced a new way to browse tags – you can now use the sidebar widget to further narrow down your tag selection by clicking hierarchies and then seeing tags specific only to that selection. So, for example, clicking the “series” heading will display only tags for the various pasta series that we’ve featured.

For those of you who prefer the old-school all-tags drop-down menu, never fear: it will remain accessible on the sidebar as well.

The author part of the tag system will be opt-in, so any authors wishing to have a tag of their own must fill out the Author Tag Request form. This form will be permanently available under the ‘Write Your Own Pasta’ heading on the top navigation bar. I’ve placed a more in-depth explanation on the form’s page, but the most important things to know before rushing over to fill out the form are as follows:

You are only eligible for an author tag if you have AT LEAST TWO stories ACCEPTED AND PUBLISHED on this website, creepypasta.com

men

If your stories are all at Crappypasta, this means that you are not eligible. The two sites do not share a tagging system.

This should be obvious, but if you have stories published on other sites (the wiki. net. org, etc) but do NOT have at least two stories accepted and posted on THIS WEBSITE, you are not eligible. We cannot tag stories not hosted here, so there would be no point in your having an author tag! To further clarify, since I anticipate some people finding this confusing: having your pastas posted elsewhere does not preclude having a tag here, but in order to have an author tag at THIS WEBSITE, you must have two or more stories accepted and posted at THIS WEBSITE. If you send a request for an author tag and enter pastas located at websites that are not creepypasta.com, it’s not going to happen.

Since this is opt-in only, do not try to “help” by submitting author tag requests for other people. If they want a tag, they will submit a request themselves. I’m doing this as an opt-in so that authors can more precisely control their tags, what pastas they want tagged, and what name specifically they want on their tag. Having strangers submit tag requests for them would steal this layer of control from them, so while your intentions may be pure, please don’t do this.

Obviously, all tag requests will be double-checked and verified. Don’t waste time by requesting an author tag for stories that you didn’t write. If I can’t confirm that the person requesting the tag wrote the stories that they’re claiming, the tag will not be created. If you are flagrantly and obviously attempting to claim work that isn’t your own, I’ll ban you from future submissions (and possibly even the site itself, if I’m in a particularly grumpy mood) – so please, guys, don’t be that jerk.

If there is anything that I’ve missed that you feel needs to be explained or clarified on the form’s page, please let me know. Sometimes things can seem obvious to me, since I’m the one creating the system, but in reality it’s not quite so clear. Sometimes I make announcement posts when I haven’t finished my coffee and I’m still feeling a little zombie-esque. Things happen.

Here’s hoping that I haven’t confused everyone, and thanks for your time – I look forward to reading everyone’s new submissions!
